After 15-month, $40M fix, UM opens Stockwell dorm

(AP) -- A 69-year-old women's dormitory at he University of Michigan has gone coed and has reopened after undergoing a $39.6 million overhaul. University President Mary Sue Coleman is scheduled to attend a grand opening ceremony at 3-5 p.m. Wednesday for Stockwell Hall.

The dorm opened in 1940 and house women until spring 2008, when it closed for renovations. University spokesman Peter Logan says the dorm had 415 beds before the makeover and now has 402 beds. Most rooms are singles.

The university says new features include a fire suppression system; better plumbing, heating and electrical systems; air conditioning; and wireless Internet access.

Students moved in Friday.
