Group holds signs in downtown Flint every week
Local supporters of healthcare reform take to the streets to rally support. It's been going on for several weeks, and the group is gaining members. It hopes to force a debate on the issue.
Every Thursday at 11AM, supporters of healthcare reform take to the streets of downtown Flint.
Members include doctors. Dr. Edna Bick of Flushing says, "I believe that healthcare is a right, and we've gotten away from the values that underline that. Everyone should get the care they need when they need it."
The group also includes nurses. Christine Cates from Teamsters Local 332 says, "The people that need it the most, we're finding out that because they don't have health insurance and need treatment, they're not going to get treatment because they can't afford it."
Maryion Lee from the Genesee County Progressive Democrats says, "It's called a single-payer system, meaning the government collects the money and then the money is paid to our private selected doctors."
Mike Keeler, from UAW Local 599 says, "We want healthcare for all, and it doesn't matter if it's single payer or public option, but there has to be a way to keep costs down. If it doesn't have that, we're against it."
Opponents say, government healthcare would drive up the cost of healthcare and reduce the quality of it.
President Obama has changed the deadline of when he'd like to see healthcare reform. Right now, he says he'd like to get something through by the end of the year.
