Genesee County Commissioners will vote on a proposed balanced budget, after adjusting spending to eliminate an estimated $15 million deficit.
The cuts will be felt in every department across the county.
Here is a look at just some of the bullet points in the proposed budget.
-- County workers will be asked to take furlough days as county government is shut down for 8 days next year. That is expected to save the county $200,000 per day.
--The county's travel and training fund will be cut by about half, or $100,000.
--$500,000 will be taken out of the building and grounds balance.
-- 19.5 positions throughout county government would be cut.
The Genesee County Sheriff’s office is in large part being spared in the proposed plan.
Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell says he approves of the proposed plan. It calls on his office to cut about $300,000. Two thirds of that would be taken from his department as the County Commission takes over income made from the sale of toiletries to inmates at the jail.
The cuts are far less than originally proposed by County Controller George Marini. He suggested earlier this year that $750,000 be cut from Pickell’s office.
Meantime, commissioners are watching Lansing, fearing their balanced budget will once again be in the red. State lawmakers are looking at cutting revenue sharing with counties in order to balance the state’s budge. Such a move would send commissioners back to the drawing table.
