(AP) -- DETROIT - The newsstand price of The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press has doubled to $1, the first increase since 2003.
The change covers papers sold Monday through Saturday at coin boxes or at retailers. The $1.50 price of the Sunday edition of the Free Press won't change in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, although some dealers must stop selling it for $1.
The News doesn't publish a print edition on Sunday. Home delivery prices aren't changing.
The News and Free Press have separate newsrooms but their business operations are run by the Detroit Media Partnership.
Rich Harshbarger, vice president of consumer marketing at the partnership, says many people were unhappy with the price increase.
He says many metro dailies in the U.S. also cost $1.
