SAGINAW -- Nursing homes are preparing for billions of dollars in federal spending cuts thanks to a Medicare rate adjustment. That has many nursing facilities in Mid-Michigan like Hoyt Nursing and Rehab Centre in Saginaw on alert.
“It’s difficult all over,” said Linda Brown-Meyer, administrator of the facility. “Just trying to figure out where you're going to make those cuts; where you're going to continue giving the residents the care that they need,” she said.
$16 billion will be cut over the next ten years thanks to a move enacted by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services. That comes on top of state funding cuts. Brown-Meyer said nursing facilities have an 8 percent cut on the table in this year’s unresolved budget. They took a 4 percent hit last year.
"You have a set core group of your nursing and Certified Nursing Assistants that provide your direct care. (This is) your needed care to your residents. You have another group (like) activities and other services to your residents. That's where you're going to have to look,” she said.
