(AP) -- A 58-year-old Detroit man has been killed after the motorized wheelchair he was in fell eight floors down an elevator shaft in a downtown building. Detroit police are investigating the apparent accident that occurred about 4:10 p.m. Monday.

Spokesman John Roach says it appears the wheelchair had been moving erratically and bumping into the elevator door on the eighth floor of the building at Grand River Avenue and Washington Boulevard.

Roach says witness statements are conflicting, but at some point the door opened. The wheelchair then lurched forward or backward into the shaft.
