(AP) -- ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - The University of Michigan says it will improve its environmental practices by measuring and cutting greenhouse gas production and increasing sustainability courses and research. President Mary Sue Coleman says the school will use its resources in an effort to "make significant contributions" to solving what she calls "an urgent and extraordinarily complex problem."
The university says Coleman will head a new Sustainability Executive Council to make sure environmental sustainability programs get top-level attention. She has named Don Scavia to the new job of special counsel to the president for sustainability. He'll continue to direct the university's Graham Environmental Sustainability Institute.
