DELTA COLLEGE, BAY COUNTY -- Governor Jennifer Granholm visited students at Delta College in Bay County Tuesday, praising those who have taken part in the No Worker Left Behind job retraining program. Granholm said more than 102,000 workers have entered the program in a little over two years.
"It paid for my education and my training,” said Bay City resident Tyler Sutton. “I went through the Delta College CPI program which is the chemical processing program,” said Sutton, who is now working for Dow Corning after 20 years in the retail industry.
Granholm said the program is an essential part of revitalizing the state’s wounded economy, along with bringing in additional industries to the state.
"You have to do both,” Granholm said. “You have to add new sectors as well as train new people for those sectors. That's why it's such an important 1-2 punch.” Despite concerns over state budget cuts and Michigan having the highest unemployment in the nation at 15.2 percent, Granholm said the program will be secure through stimulus dollars.
"The reason the funding will still be there is the federal government has stepped up as part of the Recovery Act."
