(AP) -- GAYLORD, Mich. (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Bob Davis of Michigan has died. He was 77. Mark Ruge previously served as chief of staff for Davis. He says the congressman died Friday at a hospice in Arlington, Va., and had suffered kidney and heart failure.

Davis represented northern Lower Michigan and the Upper Peninsula in Congress from 1979 to 1993. In recent years, he worked at a law firm in the Washington, D.C., area. Ruge remembers Davis as "a great man who just cared very much for the people of his district."

Davis also served two terms in the Michigan House and two terms in the state Senate. He was the Michigan Senate Republican leader from 1974 to 1978.

Davis was born in Marquette but attended school and worked in St. Ignace. He lived in Gaylord for much of his time in Congress.
