(AP) -- Michigan State University will spend about $8 million it is getting from the federal stimulus package to help students who have lost scholarships from the state.
The university says Wednesday it will help offset the loss of Michigan Promise grants for the 2009-10 academic year.
The state killed funding for the program even though about 96,000 students statewide had qualified for the cash. Students are
supposed to get up to $4,000 over their academic careers, typically in annual installments of $1,000.
Michigan State will provide $1,000 for more than 2,000 freshmen and sophomores with the greatest financial need. Another 6,000 students will get $500.
The university also plans to cut tuition rates by $5 per credit hour this spring.
