(AP) -- EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State Police troopers will be looking for drunken drivers during increased traffic patrols this Thanksgiving weekend. Troopers say they will be watching for unsafe driving during a period that begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday and runs through Sunday. Authorities seek to reduce the number of crashes during the holiday period, which last year resulted in the death of 13 people in nine crashes. Seven of those crashes involved alcohol.

The enforcement effort is part of a national initiative known as Operation CARE, which stands for Combined Accident Reduction Effort. Operation CARE started in 1977 as a joint program between Michigan and Indiana state police.
