Dozens of people turned out for a World AIDS Day event in Saginaw. A Candlelight Vigil was held to spread awareness of the HIV and AIDS disease. The event was put on by organizers at the Sacred Hearth Rehabilitation Center.
Resident of the Saginaw area Charles Coleman shared with NBC25 News the importance of World AIDS Day. "I have lot some friends who have died from AIDS. It started out with HIV and ended up with AIDS a few years back. It was very hard to see them go," says Mr. Coleman.
Over 18,000 residents are currently infected with HIV or aids in the state; Nearly 360 in the Bay, Midland, and Saginaw areas. Many others are unknown. African American women between the ages of 18- and 30 are also vulnerable to this disease. "If you're sexually active get tested; know your status and know the status of your partner and save your own life," says organizer Chester Martin.
Health Delivery Inc Prevention and Outreach Center provide free confidential HIV testing to people who get tested. They also give $10.00 gift cards provide free condoms.
