The trial is underway for a former Flint Williams Elementary teacher accused having sex with a 12-year-old student.
Investigators say Benton had sex with the sixth-grader twice in the fall of 2007. She had been tutoring him at times at her home.
The investigation started after the boy’s mother turned in a recording of a phone conversation between the child and teacher. Jurors strained to hear the muffled recording in court today.
“That conversation corroborates the sexual relationship between teacher and student,” says Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton.
Defense attorney Michael Cronkright says the accusations are false and outrageous, and he will prove this in court. Benton has pleaded not guilty.
If convicted she faces up to life in prison.
