The cheering started as the buses pulled into view at Lapeer Armory-National Guard post. Hundreds of families waited in suspense for the chance to hug, kiss, or simply greet their loved ones.
For one man, the suspense multiplied by a nagging question. He arranged to ask it at the podium in front of the company in formation. She said yes.
Specialist Megan Heinlen says she didn’t see the proposal coming, but its fitting. She met her new fiancé, Stephan Moon, when she joined the military in high school. He was not on this mission, but is also a Michigan Army National Guard specialist, and says it is an honor to propose in front of fellow soldiers.
“If I could have shouted if to the world I would have,” he said.
Others greeted tearful mothers, and babies that have transformed into toddlers.
The approximately 130 members of the 464th Quartermaster Company have served in Afghanistan for approximately eight months.
