(AP) -- Lt. Gov. John Cherry says he hasn't given up on finding the money to revive Michigan's main college scholarship program.
Cherry is proposing a 10-cents-per-bottle fee on companies that sell bottled water from Michigan. He estimates it would raise about $118 million a year.
That's enough money to restore the unfunded Michigan Promise scholarship and have roughly $18 million left over for wetlands programs, according to Cherry's office.
The Democrat made the announcement this week and is expected to provide more details Monday.
The plan likely will be opposed by those who say the fee would be passed along to consumers through higher water prices.
Cherry is among the Democrats who could be the party's nominee to run for governor in 2010.
