MIDLAND -- It’s official, the Midland Public School Board of Education decided to close five elementary schools at a school board meeting on Monday. The Midland school closings will be Parkdale, Cook, Longview, Mills and Chippewassee. A few teachers will also be laid off. NBC25 News spoke with students who say they are saddened by the outcome.
Dow High School Senior Kate McFadden works at her high school paper. Because of Monday night’s layoffs Kate fears the future of her high school paper and many other activities at her school will not look so bright. “Both my guidance counselor as well as my update advisor for my high school paper were cut,” said Kate.
And many other Midland school teachers are feeling the blow of budget cuts. This after the first round of lay offs was voted on at Monday nights city counsel meeting.
Parents, teachers and students fought to keep their programs, schools and teachers in place. Many feared for the quality of education after consolidations are in place. “Counselors having too many kids can forget about things and the overall effectiveness could defiantly go down,” said Dow student Ian Kullgren.
This is a senior year for these students that will go down in history books. “Keith Shulty he was a really good teacher he was my computer tech teacher. I had him my freshman year and I feel for him. He’s got a two -year -old and very young children, and my heart goes out to him and his entire family,” said Midland High student Stephen Ohsowski.
This isn't the last of cuts to come for the Midland Midland Board of Education say more budget cuts are expected in the future.
