This holiday season, Hurley Medical Center wants you and your family to stay healthy and feel fantastic.

“The two main ingredients to remain healthy are eating right and exercising daily,” said

Dawn Scott, RD, MA, Assistant Director, Nutrition Services at Hurley Medical Center.

“It’s simple to take care of yourself. You just have to make a conscious, committed effort.”

Be conscious of what you eat.

Many people have a tendency to snack on sweets and treats that are loaded with sugar and fat. This adds calories but no nutrition. Instead, snack on vegetables that are naturally full of fiber. This helps you feel full longer and provides necessary vitamins.

Before attending a party or social event, make sure there is some sustenance in your stomach to prevent overindulging. It’s a good idea to drink water before you go out. Once at the party, stay away from high-calorie appetizers. Instead, fill your plate up with grains, fruits and vegetables. Wait about 10 minutes before you go back for dessert and you may feel too full to indulge in sweets.

Don’t skip your workout.

It’s a very busy time of year, but it’s important to take time for physical activity. If it’s a particularly busy day, wake up 10 minutes early and do jumping jacks, sit-ups and push-ups. This morning jumpstart speeds up metabolism and heightens energy level.

Not a morning person? Go for a walk around the neighborhood after dinner or spend 15 minutes doing yoga before bed. A nighttime exercise routine can lead to a better night’s rest.

Found an extra hour or two in your day to exercise? Treat yourself to something enjoyable. Ask a friend to go to an exercise class, play a game of basketball or go for a swim. Do something that you enjoy so that you will want to do it regularly.

“Start making healthy choices during the holiday season that carry over into the New Year,” said Scott.
