FLINT -- Many people who've fallen on hard times received help Monday during the first annual Carriage Town Ministries coat drive
“I think this year is one of the hardest years I’ve seen due to the General Motors plant closures, other layoffs and dislocated workers,” said volunteer L.W. Miller.
It was the scene outside as hundreds of people waited in line to get their 15 minutes to shop.
“Yes ma'am, I grabbed a coat, they gave me some boots, gloves, hats and everything, it was a blessing for that,” said Alvin Warford.
Carriage Town Ministries said it's important for the community to reach out and help.
"You see the need in the community, they've been waiting in the cold because they need the clothes, they need anything we can give them, and so we're just so glad to be hereto help serve the community,” said Director Trina Fraizer.
Even though Alvin Warford and others are facing hard times, they said they are thankful for the blessings Carriage Town provided to help get back on their feet.
"It’s kind of hard but you know one thing about it, I keep my focus on God and I figure everything will work out after that,” Alvin said.
Since hundreds were helped at Monday's event, organizers say they look forward to running the coat drive again this time next year.
