Snowmobile season is underway and accidents have already occurred. In two separate crashes last weekend, three snowmobilers died. Oftentimes speed is the name of the game, when safety should come first.

Wearing the necessary safety gear is essential, but learning proper snowmobile operation will help keep you safe. Snowmobile safety courses emphasize safe and responsible snowmobile operation. Many are offered for free or at low-cost through many snowmobile clubs. Online class listings are available on the Michigan Snowmobile Association website at msasnow.org/safety_class.htm.

Proper education and safety equipment like a helmet, reflective clothing and warm gear keep you safe. There are a few more things to keep in mind.

-Know your equipment and how to use it before you ride.

-Be aware of your surroundings.

-Watch out for other drivers.

Following these simple safety tips should ensure a safe snowmobile season.
