Senator Carl Levin has just completed a 3 day tour in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Sen. Levin reports it is important for the United States to continually train Afghanistan's military leadership in order to make the country a viable force of its own.
The senator says, while he does not agree with President Barack Obama’s decision to send an additional 30,000 troops overseas, he does agree with the president’s commitment to making Afghanistan an independent military force. Sen. Levin says the Afghanistan people have rallied around the president's commitment and have begun making necessary changes to improve their military.
President Obama plans to begin pulling troops from Afghanistan in July of 2011.
