Detroit's new U.S. attorney says she wants to help local prosecutors pursue violent criminals.
Barbara McQuade says there are federal laws that can be used to go after carjackers, armed robbers and people who illegally possess guns.
McQuade tells The Associated Press she doesn't "want to step on toes" of local law enforcers. But with cities and counties dealing with tight budgets, she wants to discuss ways to take referrals from them.
McQuade is the new chief federal prosecutor for Detroit and 34 counties in eastern and northern Michigan. She handled national-security cases in the Detroit office before President Barack Obama promoted her.
