(AP) -- LOWELL, Mich. (AP) - The parents of a soldier from west Michigan say he has been killed in Afghanistan. Kevin and Jeanne Beachnaw say 23-year-old Army Sgt. Lucas Beachnaw died Wednesday of small arms fire in eastern Afghanistan. They said they were given few other details. The Defense Department had not formally announced Beachnaw's death as of Thursday night.

Grand Rapids television station WOOD says Beachnaw graduated in 2004 from Lowell High School. The Grand Rapids Press says he joined the Army more than three years ago and was on his second tour in Afghanistan.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Kevin Beachnaw told The Press he planned to travel to Delaware to be at Dover Air Force Base to meet the plane carrying his son's remains Friday.
