CLIO -- The City of Clio will not be getting a new Walgreens store and the city's historical building will be preserved.
NBC25 learned Wednesday afternoon that Walgreens representatives terminated purchase agreements and will not build a store where those historic buildings now stand in downtown Clio.
The project caused quite a controversy with supporters of the Walgreens store arguing the project would bring some jobs to the area. However, residents wanted to keep the historic building standing along with the current businesses in that location.
City leaders call the move bittersweet.
"It's a little bit disappointing from the standpoint that we were going to have another business in the downtown of Clio, but overall it's going to leave the landscape the same so I think that's a positive, " said Clio City Commissioner Don Mosher.
Mosher says he hopes the Walgreen's debate opens up conversations about how to revitalize those historic buildings in downtown Clio.
