(AP) -- A new plan is advancing to help raise money for the state's popular Pure Michigan advertising campaign.
A state Senate committee approved legislation Thursday that would reallocate $9.5 million in use taxes to a fund for the campaign this year. The bill now advances to the full Senate.
The Pure Michigan campaign has only about $5 million for the current budget year. Tourism officials say the campaign needs more money quickly so national advertising can be launched for the summer travel season.
Use taxes are collected much like sales taxes on rentals, vehicle transfers and other transactions.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm has proposed adding a fee to rental cars at airports to raise money for the campaign in the next fiscal year.
