FLINT -- Sears stores across the nation are on a mission to make sure homeless veterans stay warm this winter.
“We've been to some of the other stores throughout the state and it's just a great program, we're so glad Sears, is putting all this on, and it will help our homeless veterans in our area," said Bob Downer, State Commander for AmVets of Michigan.
In an effort called Operation Blanket, the drive aims to collect as many blankets as they can, by asking customers to pitch in. “Were asking our customers to look around their house for either new or slightly soiled blankets to bring in and donate" said Glen.
In exchange for each donated blanket, customers will receive either a 20% or 10% coupon off the price of selected store items. The store has teamed up with AmVets, the organization responsible for distributing the blankets.
"I think we have about 200 homeless veterans in Flint and it's not a good situation with the snow and cold weather, they need something," said Downer. It’s their way of giving back to men and women who risked their lives to keep America safe.
“The cold weather, you know when you come across them, some of them are in chronic homelessness, they're sick they need help," said Glenda Cogswell, Executive Service Director for AmVets of Michigan.
All Michigan stores are participating in the program which ends February 18th. Sears will also make a $5,000 dollar donation directly to AmVets to further support to military veteran programs.
