FLINT -- The community is coming together to help families affected by the fire that killed four young children, ages 1, 2, 3, and 4.
The blaze started around 11 p.m. Saturday in the kitchen of a townhouse in the River Park Apartment complex off Carpenter Road in Flint, before spreading to neighboring homes.
Flint Firefighters say a 28-year-old man fell asleep while cooking downstairs. A neighbor saw flames then banged on the door to wake him up. He woke up, but the fire was too intense. He could not get upstairs to rescue his child and the three children he was babysitting for friends. Witnesses say he jumped out a first-floor window to safety.
Flint Police say they’ll be doing tests on the now melted smoke detectors from the home, to find out whether they were working.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
Flint Mayor Dayne Walling, 3rd Ward Councilman Bryant Nolden, and Pastor Reginald Flynn announced an effort to help those left homeless and the families of the four children who died. They have set up a fund at a local credit union.
