BURTON -- The Burton city mayor is running for a position as state representative.

Mayor Charles Smiley has been the mayor of Burton for approximately twenty years. Now, he tells NBC25 he is looking to move to Lansing to make a difference in the state.

Smiley says he plans on using his experience to prevent layoffs and help fix the budget, just as he has been able to do with the city of Burton.

Smiley will be running as a Democrat for the 50th district state representative seat, which is currently held by Democratic Representative Jim Slezak of Davison.
