(AP) -- Michigan lawmakers are ready to start hearings on the state's next public education budget. State House and Senate committees are scheduled to hold a joint hearing on Gov. Jennifer Granholm's proposed schools budget Wednesday. The plan covers spending for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1.
Granholm's proposal calls for keeping schools spending fairly steady. That would be welcome news for districts that are absorbing cuts of at least $165 per student in the current budget year. But the new proposal is based largely on a tax increase proposal that already is meeting opposition.
Granholm wants to slightly lower the state sales tax rate and expand the tax to some services.
