Keeping your computer safe from new virus

There is a new computer virus that has already infected more than 75,000 computers across the world.  So, we turned to local computer expert Lucas Woolard, of IO Software to find out what you need to know to keep your computer safe.

The virus has been named the Kneber botnet by the computer security firm that discovered it, NetWitness.  The Kneber botnet targets the login credentials for financial, social networking  sites, and email systems and sends the data back to the hackers.  By targeting the login credentials for financial sites the hackers would be able to steal victims money.  Gathering the login information and answers to security questions from other password protected sites would allow the malicious software developers to steal the identity of their victims.

The best way to protect yourself from this virus is to use smart Web surfing practices.  Such as, don't download email attachments from addresses you do not recognize, don't click on suspicious links to websites, and be wary of any email or website that you are unfamiliar with that asks you to enter in any personal information.  Also be sure to have an antivirus program that is up to date and set to scan your system for viruses.  Keep in mind though that no antivirus is perfect so even if your antivirus does not detect anything, you may still be infected.  If you suspect that you already are infected with this virus or any other, make sure your antivirus program is up to date and run a scan on your system.  However, the best option is to have a professional at your local computer repair shop, such as IO Software, clean your computer for you.
