SAGINAW TOWNSHIP -- Nearly 100 divers hit the frigid waters of Saginaw County Saturday in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge.  It was held at Saginaw Township’s William H. Haithco Recreation Area.  Donations of $50 were taken to benefit the Special Olympics.

The water came in at 32 degrees and the ice was about 14 inches thick, and many like Michigan State Trooper Ray Rollet of the Bay City Post had a go at it.

“It was terrifying,” he said with a laugh.  “It was good.  I was out of the water as soon as I hit it.”

“I just think this is a great thing,” said his fiancé Marienne Rutkowski.  “A lot of people showed up and a lot of donations I’m sure came in.  It’s just a lot of fun out here,” she said.

Organizers said they had more divers this year than they did last year.  There was no word on exactly how much money was raised. The Saginaw County Sheriff's Department dive team was on hand during the event.
