(AP) -- U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow say Michigan's public schools are eligible for $425.3 million in building loans under a federal stimulus program.
The Democratic lawmakers announced the funding Wednesday. They say schools will be able to borrow at zero or low interest under the economic stimulus program.
They say Michigan will administer $297.6 million from the sale of the federally backed bonds, and the Detroit Public Schools will administer $127.6 million.
Levin and Stabenow say the money can be used to pay for construction, rehabilitation or repair of a public school or for buying land for a new school.
