(AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard is working to put navigational aids including buoys and beacons back into the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. The Ninth Coast Guard District began the annual effort last month. Operation Spring Restore is the largest domestic buoy operation and involves the re-installment of about 1,284 navigational aids.

Work is expected to be completed by May 28. Nearly half of the 2,628 navigational aids in the region are taken out of service during the winter months due to decreased vessel traffic and to minimize damage from ice and inclement weather.:
