The U.S. Coast Guard Station Saginaw River in Essexville is searching Saginaw Bay for a missing boater.

A 27-year-old man, who was kayaking near Fish Point on Saginaw Bay, was reported missing Wednesday evening by family members, according to a representative from the Coast Guard.

Nathan Southgate's kayak was found overturned about one and one-half miles northwest of the ramp where he launched at Sunset Marina.

A helicopter is involved in the search and local law enforcement, friends and his family searched wooded, swampy areas on the shoreline as well," said Cmdr. David Beck, Chief of Response, Coast Guard Sector Detroit.

Coast Guard officials are not revealing Southgate's hometown.

Apparently, Southgate lauched his kayak from a ramp near the marina, Wednesday, at approximately 6 p.m., and his family expected him back by 9 p.m. When he did not return, his family contacted 911 and the the Coast Guard to report him overdue. It is not known if he wore his life jacket.
