(AP) -- Michigan lawmakers plan to seek a compromise on a proposed public employee retirement incentive plan this week. The Democrat-run House could vote on a version of the proposal as early as Tuesday. The Republican-led Senate already has passed a version of the legislation.

Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm wants to persuade roughly 46,000 eligible teachers and state employees to retire as part of a budget-balancing plan. The state faces an overall budget deficit of $1.7 billion for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1.

Granholm is concerned about the slow pace of action on the retirement plan. She says it must be passed soon for schools to able to address staffing for next academic year.
