(AP) -- Michigan State Police deputy director Eddie Washington Jr. will take over the agency's top job next month when Col. Peter Munoz leaves to become a U.S. marshal. Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced the appointment Wednesday. It takes effect May 23.

As deputy director, Washington is commander of the Field Services Bureau, overseeing two regions of the state as well as divisions dealing with criminal investigation, traffic safety and special operations.

He joined the state police in 1984 and has reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. In his new post, he also will serve as Michigan's homeland security director and state director of emergency management.

The Michigan State Police has 2,600 enlisted and civilian employees.
