FLINT -- Residents in Flint’s Mott Park neighborhood got what they wanted Thursday: an action plan to re-open the city-owned Mott Park Golf Course, and rotouinely trim the grass and greens. A private company has been contracted to do the work.
“This has been something that has been on (Mayor Dayne Walling’s) mind for the last 6 to 8 months, but it has been complicated by budget issues, and we’re trying to get through labor negotiations,” said City Administrator Gregory Eason, during a community rally that drew dozens, led by City Councilman Sheldon Neeley.
Eason said lawnmowers will be roaring Friday morning, with the goal of finishing the landscaping by the weekend. If all goes according to plan, the course could be back open by summer.
Meanwhile agreements have been made with two unions that oversee the city’s four courses, to steadily re-open them to the public. Part of the agreement would allow non-profit groups to help with the maintenance.
The Kearsley Lake Golf Course will also open by June 1, joining the Swartz Creek course already in operation. Meanwhile several bidders continue to see how they could get control of the Mott facility, but Eason said collective bargaining agreements prevent the course from being leased out.
