Michigan law-makers designate May 25th, 2010 as Missing Children's Day.
It's a effort to recognize efforts in the state to reunite missing children and their families.
On its website, The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says 43 children are missing in Michigan.
However, the organization believes there are many more cases in Michigan that aren't reported.
Nationally, Russell Petty from The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says, "On average, reported to law enforcement are 800,000 children reported a year as missing. That breaks down to 2,000 children per day."
That's why a group of law-makers, lawyers, and law enforcement are urging Michigan residents to pay attention to the issue.
Jeff Mayes, democrat representative from Bay City, says "It's just a way to communicate that not only law enforecment, but communities, families, all need to be a part of an effort to protect our kids and look out for not just our own children, but our neighbors children too."
The project is called "Take 25." Every May 25th, it encourages parents to take 25 minutes to talk to their children about being safe in public and on the internet.
Terry Brown, democrat representative from Pigeon sponsored the bill, says "Our children are our most valuable resource, and we just can't allow this to happen."
The latest battle is on the internet. Children, many from Michigan, and being lured from their homes by predators who talk to them over the internet through online gaming and social networks.
The group hopes both parents and children recognize what's okay and not okay online.
Petty says, "Making sure those net-surf controls are in place. And also if kids are approached and cyber-bullyed or get threatening messages, they know to tell a trusted adult."
It's an effort to keep kids safe in an ever-changing world of dangers.
The awareness doesn't stop there. May is National Missing Children's Month. Next month is Internet Safety Month.
Child-safety advocates are calling for Michigan to adopt a mandated state-wide registry for all missing children.
