AAA Michigan says an estimated 1.1 million Michiganians will travel on vacation during the Memorial Day weekend, and state travel is expected to be up slightly from last year.
Despite a busy weekend on the roads, gas prices remain relatively low.
“Usually we see a $0.15- $0.20 hike right before the holidays,” says gas station owner Devin Conlee. “And this year it has been steady.”
He owns six gas stations in Mid-Michigan, and says gas station owners are surprised. He expected the oil spill to drive prices up for the holiday travel season.
If you turn to the experts, you’ll find no one theory as to how gas prices are determined. Each analyst seems to have a different explanation.
One theory is gas prices have dropped because of a high level of oil inventory.
Another theory says he lower prices are thanks to oil prices dropping with the stock market due to economic concerns in Europe.
“It is kind of like UFO theory,” says Conlee. “You never will know. You’ll never get a true answer.”
