(AP) -- LANSING, Mich. - The Democratic-run Michigan House has narrowly approved a bill that would maintain current levels of state aid for public universities in the next budget year.

The bill passed 55-51 Tuesday mostly along party lines.

The Republican-led Senate has approved a bill to cut university funding by more than 3 percent in the budget year that starts Oct. 1. A bipartisan panel likely will need to reach a deal.

Disputes continue on whether to require universities that do embryonic stem cell research to report some statistics to the state.

The House approved an amendment 58-48 to require the reports.

But the amendment was dropped in the final version of the House bill through a procedural move by Democratic leaders.

The higher education bill is Senate Bill 1157.
