(AP) -- Kroger Co. says it's reached a tentative three-year agreement with a labor union, averting a strike by 14,000 workers at 133 stores. The Cincinnati-based grocery chain said Thursday night it agreed to terms with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 876. Terms of the deal weren't released.

The announcement comes from the company's offices in the Detroit suburb of Novi. The Detroit News says the previous contract expired Wednesday night, and the union had earlier authorized a strike.

Kroger says it has about 334,000 employees at 2,468 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states.
