Monday, June 14th, is Flag Day. This day marks the anniversary of the adoption of the stars and stripes by the continental congress 233 years ago.
Symbols of the flags' power can be seen all over the nation, like at the memorial of Iwo Jima, where the flag honors the U.S. Marines that have served the country.
50 flags surround the Washington Monument, one to represent each state in the nation.
At the Star Spangled Banner exhibit at the National Museum of American History, the flag that inspired our national anthem is now on display. Dr. Brent Glass, director of the museum, explains why that flag is especially significant. He says, “The Star-Spangled Banner is the centerpiece of the National Museum of American History. It is the flag that Francis Scott Key saw the morning of September 14th, 1814 that inspired him to write a poem that later became our national anthem."
