YPSILANTI -- A violent crime near the campus of Eastern Michigan University has students on edge.

A 22 year old female student told police she woke up Monday morning to a terrifying sight. A man was on top of her with a knife and forced her into a sex act. She says the man then stole her laptop.

It happened just miles away from the campus on the 600 block of Cross St. in Ypsilanti.  Reports say the attacker broke in through a front window.

Now, nearby students say they're frightened for their safety.

Officials say there has been a rash of daytime break-ins in the off-campus area over the last month. Laptops were typically the target of those thefts.  Police believe the same person is responsible for those crimes.

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
