The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two boaters who fell into the Saginaw River near Channel Island, after their catamaran became separated from one of its pontoons Wednesday evening.

Coast Guard Station Saginaw River received a distress call reporting three people in the water just north of the island, at about 7:25 p.m., and launched a rescue crew aboard a 41-foot Utility Boat (UTB) minutes later.

The UTB crew arrived on scene and rescued two passengers, while a third passenger was recovered by a Good Samaritan.

“The vessel looked like it was broken in half,” said Seaman Jonathan Simmons, a boat crew member at Station Saginaw River. “The passengers seemed a little shaken up, but they were okay.”

Once onboard the UTB, the passengers were taken to Station Saginaw River and released.

All three passengers were wearing life jackets.
