BAY CITY -- Bay City officials faced a tough crowd at Monday night's city commission meeting as residents voiced their anger over proposed layoffs to the police and fire departments.
Despite the controversy, commissioners voted to pass next fiscal year's budget with a catch. They delayed layoffs until July 12 but only for workers who will accept 10.8 percent in concessions.
Many residents at the meeting said layoff notices should have never been sent out in the first place.
"Cutting police and fire? By god don't you do it! Get rid of him, get rid of him, and get rid of her," said Bay City resident Jeff Greenleaf.
"I'm not here to ask not to layoff. I'm not here to not ask for 10.8 percent. I'm here to ask for time," said Bay City Firefighters Union President Kurt Wagner.
The commission had to cut $1.6 million from the budget by June 30.
