Commissioners to hold special meeting Wednesday
BAY CITY -- Bay City commissioners will hold a special meeting Wednesday to review a budget veto issued by Mayor Charles Brunner Tuesday afternoon. The veto came one day after commissioners passed a general fund budget worth a reported $21 million that included cuts to 5 police officers, 1 commanding officer, and 5 firefighters.
Commissioners did decide to keep those public safety workers on the job until at least June 30, provided their unions reach 10.8 percent in concessions. The budget works to trim a $1.6 million deficit.
“This is my vote. I represented my vote by vetoing that action,” Brunner said. He hopes the commission “takes a second look at it.” Brunner proposed the commission fund those workers through an account known as the fund balance, perhaps all the way through summer.
However, Commission President Christopher Shannon said more than $500,000 has already been spent out of that fund for vital city operations. Shannon told NBC25 he expects the veto to be overridden, since the budget was passed unanimously.
The meeting starts at 4pm at City Hall and is open to the public. NBC25 will be there and will bring you all the details at NBC25 News at 6 and 11, and on www.connectmidmichigan.com.
