May joblessness lower in 16 of 17 Michigan regions

(AP) -- LANSING, Mich. - New figures show seasonally unadjusted unemployment rates were lower in May in 16 of 17 major Michigan labor markets.

The state said Thursday the Upper Peninsula and northern Lower Peninsula had the largest employment gains, primarily from seasonal tourism hiring.

The Flint area saw the highest May unemployment rate at 14.7 percent, compared with April's 14.9 percent. The Ann Arbor area was lowest at 8.8 percent, compared with April's 8.6 percent.

Detroit-area unemployment was 13.7 percent, compared with April's 14.8 percent.

Michigan's seasonally unadjusted jobless rate was 12.8 percent in May, compared with April's 13.7 percent. Adjusting for seasonal changes, May's rate was 13.6 percent, compared with 14 percent in April.
