(AP) -- LANSING - Eight groups are getting a total of more than $200,000 in lighthouse preservation grants that are funded by Michigan's sale of the "Save our Lights" license plate. The state recently announced Michigan Lighthouse Assistance Program grants for efforts at the Cheboygan River Front Range Lighthouse, the Fort Gratiot Light Station, the Grand Traverse Lighthouse and the Gull Rock Lighthouse.

The state says other recipients include groups working to protect the Little Sable Point Light Station, the Old Mission Lighthouse, the Pointe Aux Barques Lighthouse and the Whitefish Point Lighthouse.

Since 2000, the Lighthouse Assistance Program has awarded nearly $1.5 million to rehabilitate lighthouses. The State Historic Preservation Office administers the program.
