Michigan U.S. Sen. Carl Levin says 14 senators and 33 U.S. House members have signed a letter to President Barack Obama seeking "urgent steps to protect the Great Lakes" from an Asian carp invasion. The bipartisan group of lawmakers wrote Tuesday that discovery of an Asian carp above an electrical barrier shows that efforts so far have failed to guard the lakes from the invasive species.

The letter also asks the administration to follow an "aggressive strategy" for closing the artificial water link in Chicago between the Mississippi River and Great lakes water systems.

Fellow Michigan Democrat Sen. Debbie Stabenow and Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., say they'll announce legislation Wednesday requiring permanent closing of the water link.
