(AP) -- Gov. Jennifer Granholm has ordered that U.S. flags in Michigan fly at half-staff Thursday to honor Marine Cpl. Paul J. Miller, who died in fighting in Afghanistan. The 22-year-old from Traverse City was killed by an improvised explosive device while on foot patrol July 19 in Helmand province. Miller was part of the 3rd Combat Engineer Battalion, based at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, Calif.

He was a 2006 Benzie Central High School graduate and enlisted that year. He also served in Iraq. Miller's funeral is Thursday at Lake Ann United Methodist Church in Lake Ann. Burial will follow at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.
