(AP) -- TAYLOR, Mich. - A Westland man has been arraigned on murder charges in the fatal shooting of a Taylor police officer.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office says 36-year-old Tyress Mathews was arraigned at a hospital where he's being treated for gunshot wounds.
He's charged with first-degree murder in the July 23 death of 31-year-old Cpl. Matthew Edwards at an apartment complex in Taylor.
Authorities say Mathews shot Edwards with a handgun, then was wounded after exchanging gunfire with Edwards' partner.
Mathews' preliminary examination is Sept. 21. The Wayne County jail couldn't say if he has a lawyer.
